Făgăraș Fortress

Făgăraș, Brașov County

Făgăraș Citadel, in the city of Făgăraș (Brașov County), is easily recognizable by the moat with water that surrounds it. The construction of the stone fortification began at the end of the fourteenth century. Later, the citadel became a fortified castle and an important residence of the princes of Transylvania.

The walls, bastions and towers have been preserved, and inside there is the "Valer Literat" Museum of the Făgăraș region, with collections of history, ethnography and art. After visiting the rooms and the inner courtyard, it is also worth taking a tour of the moat: from the bank you can see how the water complemented the defense.
