First Romanian School in Sfântu Gheorghe

Sfântu Gheorghe, Covasna

The First Romanian School in Sfântu Gheorghe is a branch of the National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians, on Váradi József Street. The school's construction is documented in 1799, and Orthodox church-run teaching took place here until 1873. The building was restored between 2006 and 2011 to house an exhibition on the history of local education.

The tour takes in the classroom, the entrance hall, the library and a room recreating the teacher's home. The reconstructed desks are displayed with old school objects: writing slates, pens, inkwells and abacuses. Textbooks and books help show how pupils learned, while furniture and textiles recreate the teacher's living space. Visits are by appointment; this site is separate from the museum's main building.
