Fortified Church in Biertan

Biertan, Sibiu

The fortified church of Biertan, Sibiu county, dominates the village from a hill surrounded by walls and towers. Today's church was built at the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the next, and the ensemble is part of the UNESCO world heritage.

Inside there is the altar made up of several painted panels and the door of the sacristy, known for its mechanism with many closing points. The covered staircase ascends to the enclosure, where towers, bastions and defense rooms are preserved. Successive fortifications surround the church on several levels, above the clustered rooftops in the center of Biertan.
