Fortified Church in Cisnădie
The fortified evangelical church in Cisnădie, Sibiu county, originated as a Romanesque basilica built in the thirteenth century. Originally dedicated to Saint Walpurga, the building was converted into a Gothic style and fortified with defensive walls during the attacks that threatened the Saxon settlements.
The central tower, high roof and turreted enclosure stand out in the center of the town. Inside, preserved Romanesque parts and Gothic modifications can be traced. One room was used for the treasury of the community; the precious objects here later arrived at the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu.
