Fortified Church in Cisnădioara

Cisnădioara, Sibiu

The Church of Saint Michael in Cisnădioara, Sibiu County, occupies the top of a rocky hill above the village. The Romanesque monument is mentioned in a document from 1223 and retains stone walls, a carved portal and the simple form of a medieval basilica.

The path climbs through the forest to the enclosure wall, which surrounds the church and the edge of the plateau. The western portal, with several recesses and columns, is the main decorative element. From the fortified courtyard you can see the village of Cisnădioara, the wooded hills and the area of Cisnădie, and inside the austere space of the stone church is preserved.
