Fortified Church in Dârjiu

Dârjiu, Harghita

The Dârjiu fortified church is located in Dârjiu commune, Harghita county. The Unitarian place of worship is a medieval church surrounded by walls, towers and storage spaces. The ensemble is part of the group of Transylvanian fortified churches on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Inside are fifteenth-century murals, including scenes from the legend of Saint Ladislaus. Fortifications were strengthened to defend the community and its property. The rooms in the enclosure are linked to the tradition of storing grain and provisions. The tower at the entrance, the white walls and the galleries give it the look of a small fortress in the middle of the village.
