Fortified Church in Prejmer

Prejmer, Brașov

At Prejmer, in Brașov county, the medieval church is surrounded by a defensive enclosure with thick walls, towers and an entrance corridor. Construction of the church began in the thirteenth century, and the Saxon community developed the fortification to take shelter during attacks.

Inside the walls are refuge rooms arranged on several levels and connected by stairs and wooden galleries. The wall walk runs around the complex, and the church preserves the medieval altar. The Prejmer fortification is part of the group of Transylvanian fortified churches on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with other Saxon settlements.
