Fortified Church in Saschiz
Saschiz, Mureș
The fortified Evangelical church in Saschiz is located in Saschiz commune, Mureș County. The Gothic building was erected at the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the next, on the site of an older church. It belongs to the group of Transylvanian villages with fortified churches inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
A defensive level was built above the nave and the chancel, supported by arches and buttresses. The pointed-arch windows and portals retain Gothic forms. Next to the church rises the complex's clock tower, while the community's refuge citadel stands on a nearby hill.
