Franciscan Monastery in Deva

Deva, Hunedoara

The Franciscan Monastery of Deva was founded for the Bulgarian Catholic community established in the city at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The ensemble includes the church and the monastic buildings arranged around an inner courtyard. The church built in the first part of the century was rebuilt between 1762 and 1766, after the damage caused by the Mureș floods.

The tower is placed on the main facade and marks the entrance to the church. The interior has a vaulted nave and a polygonal choir. Around the courtyard, the corridors of the former cloister connect the rooms built in successive stages. The history of the ensemble preserves the connection between the Franciscan order and the Bulgarian families who came to Transylvania. Access to religious spaces is done with respect for community activities.
