Great Temple in Rădăuți

Rădăuți, Suceava

The Great Temple, the synagogue in the center of Rădăuți, was built in 1883 on 1 Mai street no. 2. The massive, Neo-Moorish style building has two tall towers with domes, which make it look like a cathedral.

The twin towers were an agreement between traditionalist and modern Jews: the latter wanted a dome, like the temple in Chernivtsi. In 1880, Jews were almost a third of the city's inhabitants.
