Halmyris Fortress
The Halmyris fortress is located near Murighiol, Tulcea county, close to the road to Dunavățu de Sus. The Roman and Romano-Byzantine settlement controlled an area of the old edge of the Danube Delta, and an inscription discovered here recalls a "village of sailors" linked to the Danube fleet.
The site preserves portions of the enclosure wall, towers, gates and traces of the buildings inside. The Paleo-Christian basilica brought an important discovery: the crypt with the relics of the martyrs Epictetus and Astion. The remains, systematically researched since 1981, document several stages of habitation and defense of the Murighiol citadel.
