Hercules Square in Băile Herculane
Hercules Square lies in the old center of Băile Herculane, between the Roman Catholic church and the stone bridge over Cerna. Its fronts preserve buildings erected and transformed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the resort was administered by the Habsburg authorities. The former military, administrative and spa spaces show the way the thermal springs influenced the organization of the city.
In the center of the square is the statue of Hercules, made in Vienna in 1847, with the skin of the lion and the club of the mythological hero. A walk through the square allows you to observe the facades and proportions of the old establishments. The ensemble is discovered from the public space; the buildings bordering it have different access regimes, and some require restoration.
