History and Archaeology Museum in Sighetu Marmației

Sighetu Marmației, Maramureș

The Museum of History and Archeology in Sighetu Marmației operates in Piața Libertății no. 16 and traces the past of Maramureș through archaeological discoveries, documents and objects. The archeology collection started in 1976 from the donation of Francisc Nistor and includes stone pieces and artifacts from the Bronze Age. The exhibition also presents the evolution of the city and the old county.

A part of the circuit is dedicated to the guilds: diplomas, seals, chests, inscribed plates and tools illustrate the organization of local craftsmen. Weapons and numismatic collections add swords, sabers, coins and medals, and vintage photographs document community life. The museum reopened its premises to the public after the restoration and redevelopment works announced by the institution.
