Histria Fortress

Istria, Constanța

The Histria fortress is located near the village of Istria, Constanța county, on the shore of Lake Sinoe. Greek settlers from Miletus founded the city in the seventh century BC. The settlement functioned as a port on the Black Sea before shoreline changes turned the bay into a system of lakes.

Defensive walls, cobbled streets, thermal baths, basilicas and traces of residential districts can be seen at the site. The monuments belong to Greek, Roman and Romano-Byzantine phases. The museum next to the ruins displays inscriptions, pottery and objects discovered during research. The city was abandoned in the seventh century after an existence of over a millennium.
