Holy Angels Church in Buzău

Buzău, Buzău

The Church of the Holy Angels in Buzău has a history linked to the old wooded edge of the city. The first construction is recorded in 1619, when the place was known as the church in the forest. Tradition links it to Lady Neaga, but this attribution depends on the memory of the place. The church was rebuilt in 1833 and later underwent repairs after the earthquakes.

The place preserves icons and old books, testimonies of its use by the community. On the grounds of the church, Dionisie Romano founded in 1832 the first Romanian-language primary school in Buzău. The history of religion and that of education thus meet around the same church.
