Ioan Raica Municipal Museum and Zápolya House

Sebeș, Alba

The Ioan Raica Municipal Museum in Sebeș is housed in the Zápolya House, a historic building in the town center, near the town hall. The house was built of stone in the fifteenth century and extended in the following century. Its facades and interiors preserve Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. Sessions of the Transylvanian Diet were sometimes held here, and the name of the building recalls Ioan Zápolya, who died in Sebeș in 1540.

The museum brings together collections of archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnography, art and natural sciences. Highlights include paintings by Sava Henția and objects from Franz Binder's African collection. The permanent exhibition traces the past of the local community, while the temporary exhibition rooms regularly show other items from the museum's collections.
