Ion Hagiescu-Miriște Museum of Ethnography and Urban History

Caracal, Olt

The Museum of Ethnography and Urban History "Ion Hagiescu-Miriște" operates in a restored house on Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu street in Caracal. Opened in 2024 as a section of the Romanați Museum, the building belonged to the magistrate and collector Ion Hagiescu-Miriște. He had bought a ruined house and rebuilt it with the intention of turning it into a museum.

The exhibitions follow the life of the communities in Romanați, through pieces of traditional dress, fabrics, household objects and testimonies of urban history. The museum interior complements the eclectic architecture of the house: the main facade has neo-Romanian elements, and the back a different configuration, described by museographers as a ship. The restoration returned the building to the cultural function imagined by the former owner.
