Ionașcu Cathedral in Slatina
Ionașcu Cathedral, also known as Saint George's Church, is located in the old part of Slatina, on Ionașcu street. The name recalls the merchant Ionașcu Cupețu and his wife, Neaga, whose donations supported the church and other institutions of the city. The first church was built at the end of the eighteenth century, then replaced in the following century.
The current building was consecrated in 1877, and the painting was done by Gheorghe Tattarescu. The church is distinguished in the silhouette of the old center by its large body and towers. It is an active place of worship, dedicated to Saint George, and a landmark in the history of the community of Slatina. Visits to the interior must fit around church services.
