Jean Mihail Palace

Craiova, Dolj

The Jean Mihail Palace stands in the center of Craiova, Dolj County, and houses the Art Museum. The residence was built at the beginning of the twentieth century for the Mihail family, to designs by the architect Paul Gottereau. Richly decorated facades and high roofs frame a building with sumptuous interiors.

The halls preserve monumental staircases, mirrors, stucco, marble and decorative elements reminiscent of the old residence. The museum's collections include Romanian and European painting, as well as sculpture. Works by Constantin Brâncuși have a special place. The palace became a museum in 1954, combining its art collections with the architecture of an urban boyar mansion.
