Jiu Bridge – Ferdinand

Târgu Jiu, Gorj

The Jiului Bridge, also known as the Ferdinand Bridge, preserves at Târgu Jiu the memory of the battles of the First World War. On the morning of October 14/27, 1916, the city's residents participated in the defense of the river crossing. Among those who repelled the onslaught of the German troops were women, children and the elderly.

The metal structure, with arches and cross elements, is preserved near the Central Park and can be seen from the banks of the Jiu. The historic bridge has been moved from its original location, and its silhouette remains easily recognizable above the water. The visit follows the construction and the commemorative site, as part of a walk along the river.
