It is 1720. After his fleet is wrecked, a ruined merchant retreats to the countryside with his six children, including Belle, his youngest daughter, a cheerful and graceful girl. After an exhausting journey, the merchant discovers the Beast's magical realm, where he is sentenced to death for stealing a rose. Belle feels responsible for the terrible fate facing her family and decides to sacrifice herself in her father's place. She goes alone to the Beast's palace. Rather than kill her, he invites her to dinner each evening. Over time, they begin learning about one another, especially as Belle dreams at night of fragments of the Beast's past and his realm. She discovers his tragic story and learns that the fierce, solitary creature was once a charming prince. Brave as she is, Belle confronts the obstacles, opens her heart and frees the Beast from his curse. Along the way, she discovers true love.
