Large Square in Sibiu

Sibiu, Sibiu

Piața Mare is the central square of Sibiu and has existed since 1366, when the third belt of city walls was finished. A document from 1411 mentions it as a grain market.

It is the largest square in the old town. Fairs, meetings of the inhabitants and even executions were held here: in 1703 Johann Sachs von Harteneck, the leader of the Saxons, was beheaded here. The square is surrounded by colorful houses and the Council Tower.
