Liteni Fortress

Liteni, Cluj

Liteni Fortress stands on a rock above the Iara valley, near the village of Liteni, Săvădisla commune, Cluj county. It is first documented in 1324 as Castrum Leta. Its position on the promontory let it watch over the valley and the roads that passed through this part of Transylvania.

Of the medieval structure, walls, parts of rooms and traces of fortifications built into the rock survive. The ruins suffered from repeated conflicts and destruction, including the explosion of the gunpowder stores in the sixteenth century. From near the walls you can see the valley, the villages and the wooded slopes of the region. The fortress is also known as Lita or Géczy.
