Magna Curia and the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization

Deva, Hunedoara

Magna Curia, also known as Bethlen Castle, is located at the foot of the Deva Citadel hill. The former noble residence was expanded in the seventeenth century, at the time of Prince Gabriel Bethlen, and remodeled in the Baroque style in the following century. The main facade's raised porch, windows and high roof reflect these transformations. Since 1934, the building has housed the county museum, now the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization.

The visit combines the architecture of the residence with the museum's exhibitions. The ground floor keeps its vaulted rooms, while the first-floor rooms are laid out one after another along the building. The main facade has pilasters and a symmetrical composition, the result of the Baroque alterations. The residence is located next to the city park and has its own access, at the base of the hill; the ruins of the medieval fortification are higher up, on the summit.
