Maria Theresia Bastion

Timișoara, Timiș

The Maria Theresia bastion is the largest preserved portion of the Habsburg fortifications of Timișoara. Built in the eighteenth century, it was part of the citadel with nine bastions, moats and successive enclosures, which protected the city with low and thick walls, suitable for the age of artillery.

The ensemble preserves the brickwork, courtyards, passages and vaulted rooms used for storing provisions. The restoration highlighted the forms of the bastion and its interior spaces. Today there are exhibitions of the National Museum of Banat, cultural spaces and restaurants, in the middle of the central area of the city.
