Medieval fortifications of Sebeș
The medieval fortifications of Sebeș surrounded the inner city and still outline parts of the historic center. A document from 1387 records the building of the town's fortifications. The stone walls, towers and gates were once backed up by water-filled moats and ponds, meant to strengthen the defenses on ground with few natural advantages.
Among the preserved towers, the Tailors' Tower stands at the south-eastern corner of the enclosure, and the Octagonal Tower marks the north-eastern section. Also surviving are the Shoemakers' Tower and buildings of the former gates, some later converted to other uses. Loopholes and traces of the defensive system can be seen on sections of the wall. A visit follows the fortifications through the town from the outside and does not include access to every tower.
