Medieval Fortress in Târgu Mureș

Târgu Mureș, Mureș

The medieval fortress of Târgu Mureș, Mureș County, preserves an enclosure of walls and bastions near the city center. The present fortification was built on the site of an older complex, after the destruction of the early seventeenth century. Local guilds contributed to the construction and maintenance of the towers.

In the courtyard are the Reformed Church and buildings used for history and archaeology exhibitions. The bastions bear the names of trades, including Tailors, Shoemakers and Butchers. The brick walls, gates and green courtyards preserve the layout of a town fortification later converted for cultural use.
