Medieval passages of Bistrița
Bistrița's medieval passages form a network of short links between the central square, the old streets and the route of the former fortifications. The town hall presents 22 such passages, some open like narrow streets, others covered with masonry vaults. They preserve the shape of the plots from the old burg and the way the inhabitants moved towards the towers defended by the guilds.
The historical names recall the trades practiced in the city: rope makers, goldsmiths, butchers and saddlers. A walk through the passages alternates light portions with vaulted passages, walls of houses and entrances to courtyards. Several routes have been rehabilitated for pedestrian traffic. The tourist information center in Central Square provides maps and information about these links. The route can be organized on public streets, keeping free access for residents and commercial spaces in the area.
