Memorial to the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance

The Memorial to the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance is located in the former prison in Sighetu Marmației, Maramureș County. The building, erected at the end of the nineteenth century, was used after 1948 for political detention. Its transformation into a memorial began in the 1990s, through the Civic Academy Foundation.

The cells and corridors house exhibitions about repression, deportations, life in detention and resistance to the communist regime. Documents, photos and personal items are presented in rooms that preserve the structure of the penitentiary. The inner courtyard also includes a sculptural ensemble dedicated to the memory of the victims, part of the museum route.
