Mihai Dăncuș Maramureș Village Museum

Sighetu Marmației · Maramureș

On Doboieș Hill in Sighetu Marmației, the Mihai Dăncuș Maramureș Village Museum brings together houses and households from several areas of historical Maramureș. The museum was opened in 1981 and is organized like a village, with streets, gates and paths between buildings. The houses come from the valleys of Mara, Cosău, Iza, Vișeu and other communities of the region.

The thick beams, hipped roofs and porches with carved pillars show the solutions used by local craftsmen. Motifs such as the tree of life and sun signs can be seen at the gates, and inscriptions on some buildings preserve names and dates. Household interiors and outbuildings complete the presentation of occupations and family life. The visit takes place outdoors, on Muzeului street, at the exit from the city towards Vadu Izei.
