Mihai Eminescu Old Theatre in Oravița

Oravița, Caraș-Severin

The theater in Oravița was built in 1816 after the model of the old Burgtheater in Vienna and was inaugurated in 1817 by Emperor Francis I of Austria. It is the oldest theater building in Banat.

Because the Viennese theater was demolished in 1888, the hall in Oravița retains the appearance of its decorations, with gilded boxes. In 1868, Mihail Pascaly's theater troupe performed here, in which Mihai Eminescu was the prompter. Today the building also houses a museum about the history of the theater and the city.
