On the French Riviera, at the foot of the Maritime Alps, Monte Carlo is a district of the Principality of Monaco. Place du Casino is home to the casino, the Hôtel de Paris, opened in 1864 by Prince Charles III, and the Monte Carlo Opera (Salle Garnier), designed by Charles Garnier, architect of the Paris opera house. Most of the circuit of the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix also runs through here.
