National Museum of the Romanian Peasant
Bucharest
On Kiseleff Street in Bucharest, the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant preserves objects from the households and workshops of the villages. Collections include folk costumes, ceramics, textiles, furniture and tools. The red brick building, with arches and a tower inspired by the architecture of monasteries, was designed by Nicolae Ghica-Budești.
The museum was re-established under its current name in 1990, led by the painter Horia Bernea. The displays place crafts, family life and faith side by side. In 1996, the institution received the European Museum of the Year Award.
