National Museum of the Union and Union Hall in Alba Iulia
The National Museum of the Union in Alba Iulia occupies the Babylon building, built between 1851 and 1853 for the officers of the Austrian garrison. The long facade, arched portico and massive walls retain the appearance of the former military pavilion. In the halls of the museum, collections of archeology and history are presented, and the lapidary gathers stone monuments. The institution has been operating in this building since 1968.
Across the road is the Union Hall, the place where, on December 1, 1918, the representatives of Transylvanian Romanians decided on the union with Romania. The interior preserves inscriptions with the documents of the Union, a mural painting and the busts of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria. The two buildings have their own visiting circuits within the same institution. The exhibition on the Union of 1918 and temporary exhibitions complete the visit to the historical hall.
