Natural History Museum in Aiud

Aiud, Alba

The Museum of Natural Sciences in Aiud is located in the building of Bethlen Gábor College, on the street of the same name. Its collections go back to Professor Benkő Ferencz, who set up the school museum in 1796. In 1950, the collections were split between two institutions: a history museum and a natural history museum. The latter preserves rocks, minerals, fossils, pressed plants and zoological specimens.

The exhibition begins with the geological past, with fossils mainly from Transylvania, mineral samples and fragments of meteorites. Other rooms feature invertebrates, fish, amphibians and reptiles, then birds and mammals from several continents. Skeletons, eggs and nests complete the collections on display in the cases.
