Northern Transylvania Holocaust Memorial Museum
The Holocaust Memorial Museum in Northern Transylvania is located in the former synagogue in Șimleu Silvaniei, Sălaj county. Opened in 2005, the museum documents the history of the Jewish communities in the region and the deportations of 1944, through photographs, documents, testimonies and personal objects.
The synagogue building, erected in the nineteenth century, is itself part of the presented heritage. The exhibition traces community life before the war, the losses suffered during the Holocaust and the preservation of the memory of the survivors. The panels and documents provide names and local histories, linking European events to the localities of northern Transylvania.
