Olari Church in Curtea de Argeș

Curtea de Argeș, Argeș

The Potters Church in Curtea de Argeș stands on Cuza Vodă Street, in the old potters’ quarter. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is recorded in documents from the seventeenth century. The construction combines masonry with wooden elements and has proportions similar to those of a village church.

The broad shingle roof protects the painted walls, and a covered external staircase leads up to the belfry. The frescoes on the facades are among the characteristic details of the monument; one of the scenes represents Death. The rectangular plan and some architectural features recall Moldavian churches, a link associated with the tradition of the craftsmen who settled in this quarter. The church and its enclosure wall form a historical ensemble.
