Olteț Gorge

Polovragi, Gorj

The Olteț Gorge is located near Polovragi commune, Gorj County, between the Parâng and Căpățânii Mountains. The Olteț River has carved a narrow valley in the limestone, with walls that come very close together in some sections. The road through the valley follows the river above its rocky bed.

Cave entrances, fissures and blocks detached from the walls can be seen on the slopes. Polovragi Cave opens near the entrance to the gorge, above the river. Forests cover the gentler slopes, leaving the cliffs exposed. The gorge was formed by river erosion and by water flowing through the fissured rock. Polovragi Monastery is at the end nearest the village.
