Ovid Square in Constanța

Constanța, Constanța

Ovidiu Square is located on the Constanța peninsula, close to Tomis port. In the middle of it stands the statue of the Roman poet Ovid, made in 1887 by the Italian sculptor Ettore Ferrari, the first statue erected in the city after Dobrogea returned to Romania.

The bronze statue shows the pensive Ovid, dressed in a long toga. Behind it is the building of the former City Hall, today the National Museum of History and Archeology, and a copy of the statue was placed in 1925 in Sulmona, the poet's hometown.
