Păcuiul lui Soare Fortress

Păcuiul lui Soare Island, Constanța

The Păcuiul lui Soare fortress is located on an island of the Danube, in Ostrov commune, Constanța county, next to the Dervent hill. The Byzantines built the fortification in the tenth century as a naval base. The waters of the river covered and eroded a large part of the fortress, preserving sectors of the enclosure walls.

The ruins show the masonry of large stone blocks, the gate tower and the layout of the former wharf. The harbor platforms descended in steps to the water, and there were openings in the walls for the mooring of ships. Archaeological research started in 1956 identified dwellings, pottery and other traces of the community that lived here in the Middle Ages.
