Palace of the Princes of Transylvania in Alba Iulia
The Palace of the Princes of Transylvania in Alba Iulia was the residence of the rulers of the principality between 1541 and 1699. The ensemble grew around some medieval buildings and was expanded in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In its walls there are traces of the Roman fort Apulum, of the medieval fortress and of the transformations made in the time of the princes. Later, the building was used as a military space.
The restored wing houses the Museum of the Palace of the Princes of Transylvania. The exhibition traces the history of the residence through objects, information and interactive installations. A visible detail of the restoration is the fragments of wall painting with birds, flowers and hunting scenes, discovered under the plasters. The visit takes place in the museum spaces of the palace; the ensemble also includes areas that have had other uses over time.
