Arefu Commune, Argeș
Poenari Fortress stands above the Argeș valley, near Căpățânenii Pământeni, in Arefu commune, Argeș County. The fortification started from a medieval tower and was expanded during the reign of Vlad the Impaler. The ruins occupy a narrow ridge that overlooks the entrance to the river gorge.
The walls follow the lie of the land and preserve several towers, courtyards and traces of rooms. From the fortress you can see the valley of Argeș and the area at the foot of the Vidraru dam. Access is managed by the Argeș County Museum, whose notices set special visiting conditions depending on the situation on site.
