Probota Monastery

Probota, Suceava

In the village of Probota, which belongs to the town of Dolhasca in Suceava county, the monastery preserves the church of Saint Nicholas, built in 1530 by Petru Rareș. The murals inside and on the facades are the main artistic landmark of the ensemble. The church is part of the group of painted churches from Moldavia included in the UNESCO world heritage.

On the outside you can see the painted registers and the way the images are spread over the curved surfaces and on the walls of the church. Inside the premises, the entrance tower and the walls complete the image of a sixteenth-century princely foundation. The restoration of the paintings benefited from an international program carried out between 1996 and 2001, and other works on the ensemble were completed in 2020. Probota is located in the historical area of Moldavia, south of Suceava. Visiting the church takes place in an active monastery, respecting the spaces and religious services.
