Radu Negru Monastery

Radu Negru (old settlement site), Călărași

Radu Negru Monastery is located on the former site of Radu Negru village, in Modelu commune, Călărași County. The ensemble was formed around the parish church built between 1909 and 1912. Saint George's Church has a Greek cross plan, an open porch and three towers, decorated with a red brick band.

After the villagers were relocated, the church was left standing alone in the fields. In 1992, it was decided to establish a monastery for monks here. Later, the cells, the belfry, the enclosure wall and the chapel of Saint Stephen the Archdeacon were added. The large church has Byzantine-style murals, repainted and restored in several stages.
