Rățeștilor Church in Turda

Turda, Cluj

The Rățești Church in Turda, Cluj County, stands on Gheorghe Lazăr Street and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. It was built in 1839, through the efforts of Archpriest Basiliu Rațiu and with the financial support of his family. The name by which it is known recalls its founders. The courtyard contains graves and funerary monuments of members of the Rațiu family.

The church was built for the Greek-Catholic community from Turda Veche, whose faithful had until then attended the church in Turda Nouă. It is currently used by the Turda Veche Orthodox parish. Its history is also linked to the confessional school and the cultural fund supported by the Rațiu family, which helped young people to study. The bell tower, the body of the church and the monuments in the courtyard are the most visible parts of the complex. A stop here covers both the church and the memory of the family that paid for its construction.
