Red Lake

Lacu Roșu, Harghita

Lacul Roșu is located in the resort of the same name, within Gheorgheni municipality, Harghita county. It was formed in 1837 when a landslide blocked the flow of water. The trunks of the drowned forest that still rise above the water are its best-known sight. The wooded shores and the surrounding cliffs are part of the landscape of the Bicaz Gorge–Hășmaș National Park. Road access is on DN12C, and a visit can continue to the Bicaz Gorge. Water activities and the nearby trails depend on local conditions and the rules of the protected area.
