Retezat National Park
Retezat Mountains, Hunedoara
Retezat National Park protects part of the Retezat Mountains in Hunedoara County, in Râu de Mori, Sălașu de Sus and Pui communes and the town of Uricani. Established in 1935, the park preserves alpine ridges, glacial cirques, scree slopes and extensive forests.
Ancient glaciers carved the valleys and basins that now hold many lakes. Bucura is one of the landmarks of the massif, along with the Peleaga and Retezat peaks. Alpine meadows are home to plants adapted to the cold and wind, while large mammals and mountain birds live in the forests at lower altitudes.
