Rock-cut settlements at Aluniș–Nucu–Bozioru

Aluniș–Nucu–Bozioru, Buzău

The rock-cut settlements in the Aluniș–Nucu–Bozioru area lie in the Buzău Mountains, in Colți and Bozioru communes, in Buzău County. Small churches, monks’ cells and refuge rooms were carved into the sandstone cliffs. At Aluniș, the rock church dedicated to the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist survives, with cells nearby.

The Nucu area has remains such as the Old Agaton, the New Agaton and Dionisie Torcătorul. You can see carved entrances, small windows, niches and traces of interior fittings. Many of the rooms were used by hermits in medieval times. The sites are scattered over the hills and through the forests, at varying distances from one another.
