Roman Catholic Church in Șimleu Silvaniei
On a hill in Șimleu Silvaniei, the Roman Catholic church rises above 1 Mai Street. The current church was built in the sixteenth century, in Gothic style, on a site where excavations also identified the foundations of an older, Romanesque church. Its position and tall tower make it easily recognizable from many parts of the city.
At the entrance is a balcony supported on massive brick pillars. The church is linked to the Báthory family, who supported the local Catholic community. After the fire caused by the Ottoman attack in 1660, repairs were made with the support of Sofia Báthory. Around the building, the difference in level from the street and the access steps emphasize the location on the promontory.
