Roman galleries at Roșia Montană

Roșia Montană, Alba

The Roman galleries at Roșia Montană are located in Alba County, in the old mining area known in Antiquity as Alburnus Maior. Gold mining left passages carved into the rock, with walls cut into regular shapes and tool marks. The galleries are part of the mining landscape inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021.

The underground network includes workings from different periods, and the Roman sections have their own distinctive shapes and techniques. Wax tablets that preserve information about the life of the mining community also come from this area. The Mining Museum preserves tools and installations used to extract and process gold ore.
